Adult social services

Advice, assistance and representation on a wide range of sensitive social services issues…

Adult social services covers a vast area of responsibility for local authorities, whose role continues to evolve from that of a provider to a commissioner of services.

This growing area is putting an ever-increasing burden on the resources of local authorities, and this is matched by a growing public, political and media interest in the subject. Thus expert advice, guidance and representation are more important than ever before.

Weightmans’ specialist adult social services team has vast experience and expertise in dealing with these highly sensitive matters. Previous employment within local authority legal teams has given many of our solicitors a unique insight into the protocols, procedures and pressures under which the social services system operates. This gives them the understanding needed to provide advice that is diplomatic, appropriate and meaningful, rather than simply ‘going by the book’.

Above all, our specialist team understand the sensitivities involved in these matters, whether we are dealing with an individual case or an overall policy. We can advise on a wide range of issues, from all aspects of mental health to community care, protection of vulnerable adults, commissioning and contractual arrangements with third parties, NHS continuing healthcare determinations, ordinary residence disputes, which with our general healthcare expertise allows us to fully understand the issues from all sides.

We provide a comprehensive, proactive service that includes advice, support and training on legislation and government guidance for both the public and private sector. We can also provide representation at every legal level.
